Twenty questions with Andrew “Pickers” Pickering
1. What’s your full name and what are you currently up to (this is your only chance to shamelessly plug yourself) Andrew Patrick Pickering 4 years married with a little boy Sebastian whose 18 months
2. You grew up a drop punt from Highvale but you went to school elsewhere – Do you think your cricket game and life would have been more complete if you grew up in the school yard at Highvale with the likes of McCallum, Davies and Goddard? ? These guys would of made me look a hell of a lot smarter than I am.
3. You where well known as a late night reveler when you were younger. You were often found playing darts with Ivan at 3.00am. How much money do you owe him and do you think you will ever pay him back? Unlike Ivan I have forgotten the amount I owe him. Im sure its around the $50 mark but maybe he can shed some more light on it. As far as paying him, well I think we all know the answer to that, of course I will but while we agreed on the amount we gambled on there was no mention of the time frame for payment!!
4. Pickers you were always a sharp
dresser – tell us the story of going to The View one Thursday in a pair of
spiffy golf shoes. PS: My back was f***ed for about 4 days.
5. Under the current incentives system, how many drinkcards do you think you would've staked claim to in your prime? There are many benefits being ‘the brother who never made it’ one being countless drink cards under my brothers name at many drinking holes, one being our favourite nite club THE TUNNEL. After receiving many fringe benefits from this joint, of which the likes of McCallum, Feenstra, Davies & Goddard were only happy to assist in destroying, its a shame this mighty place is no longer open. To answer the question I would estimate around 500 (plus free entry) At least Greg won’t be able to catch anymore crabs.
6. What was your greatest moment you achieved as a Hawks cricketer? There are 2 that spring to mind: - Being hit for six at Mazenod College. The ball landed on the freeway - Scoring the magical 180 on the dart board against Ivan
7. Who where the greatest players you saw at the club? Who are your best mates from the club? Serious greatest player: Goddard then Mahns Not so serious greatest player:Slug Best mate: Hard to pick between Greg, Flea, Juzz & Powelly
8. Whats the funniest situation you have ever seen Greggy McCallum get into? Hard to split between: -Picking up a one armed girl from a night club (didn’t get a root) & falling asleep (apparently) TWICE while Feen & I slugged it out in a night club brawl.
I once saw Bernie Silvey play roulette at one of the gambling nights at the club. I asked how he was tracking. He said he was about even. I then proceeded to watch him place $5 on red & $5 on black…………….
9. Who is the most famous person you have met? Herbie Howard…
10. If someone was going to play the part of Andrew Pickering in a movie about your life story, who would it be and why? Jim Carrey—Thinks his funny but his really not.
11. Which player at the club (past or present) deserves a smack in the mouth and why? Ivan. He never gambled against me on something that wasn’t in his favour.
12. Have you ever been arrested? If so why? Just the once. Spent the night in the lock up in Utah USA for D&D. Obviously had a tad too much one night & was booted out of a club straight into the cop car. After they cuffed me they told me I was drunk & fighting. I proceeded to tell him ‘take these cuffs off me & I will show you who the fighter is’ This went down like a lead balloon. I eventually left the cell at midday the following day needing 8 stitches to my face after an altercation with the cops. Not a bad move………
Myself, Greg & Feen were turfed in the Rosebud lock up one night. Nothing too serious but it was all worth it after watching Greg shit himself for about 10 hours.
13. How did you cope with having pictures of your brothers up on the wall down the club? Did you ever consider doing a Mahns and smashing them? What pictures?
14. Did you ever use your brothers name to get a drink card at “The Tunnel”? I think I have answered this question but it did come to a screaming halt one night when the blond at door was waiting for me one night after seeing my brother interviewed on TV. After abusing me for a few minutes I told her to f**k off along with our days at The Tunnel.
15. If you won a million dollars what would be the first thing you spent it on? A racehorse
16. What is your biggest achievement off the field? I threw up on a blackjack table in Vegas after sculling quite a few Slammers. Believe it or not I was asked to leave & I was about $500 up.
17. Who would you least like to see naked? Powell
18. Has Andrew Pickering ever - Gotten drunk with Bryan Leys? No. One of the worst blokes I have ever met - Signed an autograph? Yes but proberbly a case of mistaken identity - Owned a Billy Joel Cd? Most of them - Prostituted himself for a free bed for the night? Quite a few times - Been kicked out of a club? Yes but never my fault
