Round 17 – 27/2/10

Playing Waverley at home in a must win game to remain in 4th spot, we won the toss and batted first. In conditions favourable for batting we started well and then continued to go from strength to strength, to finish at 6/299 after our 40 overs.

Raj 51 retired, Millsy 51 retired, and under 16 player Ben Wheeler 51 not out were the stars, with Lizard making 47, Tush 28 and Rama 22.

In reply Waverley were cruising at 1/150 after 20 overs before a fantastic spell of bowling by Millsy, 5/24 off 6 overs, backed up by some great fielding, saw Waverley dismissed for 228 in the 37th over. A great win!

Semi Final – 6/3/10

Playing top side Vermont at their main ground, we lost the toss and were sent into bat. On a bowlers wicket we got away to a shaky start before some consolidation saw us reach 3/84 at the drinks break. Then a massive collapse saw us all out for 109 in the 30th over. Grant Haye 25 and Stuart Wynd 24 were the best of the batsmen.

In reply we snared a couple of early wickets to see Vermont in trouble at 2/7 before they steadied to eventually pass us 4 wickets down in the 34th over.

A disappointing end to the season, but 109 was never enough runs to defend.

Thanks and regards, Slugger

Glen Waverley Hawks all out 111 (C.George 29, N.Bungey 19, M.Briginshaw 15)
Blackburn South 5/112(C.Perkins 3/30, D.Holden 1/18, M.Briginshaw 1/28)

I won the toss and elected to bat under good conditions. We slumped to be 5/24 with little resistance from the top order. We battled away and were 6/90 from 49 overs. We should have been looking to bat out the 80 overs and achieve a score around 150+ . However we couldn't manage that and were bowled out in the 58th. over for 111. That left us 19 overs to bowl to complete the first days play. I opened the bowling with Luke Galle and Matty B. Matty trapped one of their openers in front and at 1/13 from 6 overs we started well. However, we didn't get another wicket and they ended up 1/39 off 19 overs.

The next week we needed quick wickets as we were only defending 111 and they had 9 wickets in hand with only 73 runs to get to win. Matty B and Luke looked dangerous but couldn't get the break through. Chris Perkins came on and took 3 wickets and Dean "Disco" Holden took a wicket courtesy of a great leg-side stumping by Chris George.  They passed us with 5 wickets down so we were well beaten in a game we needed to win to make the finals. We need to be more committed to our cricket next season and be more consistent with our batting to improve on this seasons performance. We only had 6 batsman over 100 runs with 3 over 200 and only 1 over 300 runs. The bowling and fielding was of a high standard and rarely let us down. We were rarely chasing over 200 runs and consistently bowled teams out for around 150. Thanks to all the first eleven players for an enjoyable season I had a great time. Thanks to Ken Calder for scoring and helping me out with countless other tasks. Thanks to the committee for the opportunity to be captain/coach for the 2009/10 season. To all other players keep on enjoying your cricket and look for ways to improve your game.
