One Day team reports

Round 14 – 6/2/10

Playing top side Vermont away, we won the toss and put them in. Apart from one period where they got on top of our bowlers, we did well to restrict them to 8/216 after their 40 overs. Mick Stevenson was great with 1/17 off 8 overs and Browny was good with 2/36 off 8 overs.

In reply we started well losing our first wicket at 61, then it all fell apart to see us dismissed for 135, a disappointing effort. Browny 38, Dunge 35 and Stuey Wynd 27 were the only batsmen of any note.

Round 15 – 13/2/10

We had a bye.

Round 16 – 20/2/10

Playing Box Hill North at home, we lost the toss and were sent into the field. We toiled hard and bowled fairly well but our fielding was not up to the mark. In the end we got them all out for 265 in the 40th over. Mick Stevenson was again terrific taking 4/28 off 8 overs and Rama was good taking 2/35 off 7.1 overs.

In reply we started poorly and never recovered to be all out for 145 in the 33rd over. Grant Haye and Cuddles were the best of the batsmen each making 32.

1st XI Report

Glen Waverley Hawks All out 235 (L.Galle 72, T.Bockman 52)
Kerrimuir United All out 148 (L.Galle 4/44, M.Briginshaw 4/31)

I won the toss and elected to bat where we batted well to drinks being 1/55 off 20 overs. Bockers kept accumulating the runs and with Cookie put on a good second wicket partnership. After Cookies dismissal for 26 we lost another quick wicket before Mahns and Bockers put together another sound partnership. Bockers brought up his half century just before tea and Mahns was batting patiently. We went into tea at 3/118 and seemingly in control of the game. After tea we lost Bockers for 53 and Mahns for 26 and we were in some trouble at 5/120. Luke Galle and Nathan Bungey then got together and put on a handy 52 run partnership. Luke played the aggressive, dominant role whilst Bungey was content on nudging the ball into gaps for one's and two's. Bungey had to go on 7 when the fielder claimed a dubious catch and we were 6/172. Unfortunately the tail didn't wag and it was left to Luke to make the bulk of the runs. He played a magnificent knock of 72 and got our score up to 235 which is very good considering the slow outfield. We batted for 74.1 overs and it was disappointing not to have batted out the 80 overs and not being able to make 250+ runs which was two of our goals at the start of the day. We had two overs to bowl at them to complete the days play and they managed to be 0/3 at stumps.

The next week we were set on defending 235 to stay in the race for the finals. Matty B got us an early wicket hitting the top of off stump in a classical dismissal were the batsman was looking to hit the ball over mid-wicket with his head high in the air. Luke Galle struggled with his bowling at the other end so after bowling only four overs I brought Chris Perkins into the attack. He picked up the Kerrimuir captain trapping him LBW when he was trying to leave a ball that nipped back off the seam and at 2/44 we were on top. Nathan Bungey picked up a wicket getting a crucial caught and bowled when he took over from Matty B.  I gave Luke his second spell before tea and he bowled superbly,  swinging the game in our favour. He took 4/15 in six overs and bowled with excellent pace, bounce and control. We had Kerrimuir 7/94 at tea and only 3 wickets away from a fantastic team orientated win. The wickets after tea took some time to come but with some good steady bowling from Matty B who took the last 3 wickets we dismissed Kerrimuir for 148. It was another convincing win and we fielded well with Chris George taking two catches behind the stumps and Brad coster also took a sharp catch at second slip. we just need to play to our ability and win the final match against Blackburn South to make the finals. Congratulations to Mahns who played his 250th. game for the club having played his first game in 1983. He has made over 8,000 runs with 9 centuries having been a premiership captain. He is a life member and has been a long time committee member, president, secretary and treasurer.
