Round 3 v St. Davids

Glen Waverley Hawks 144 (S.Perkins 47*, D.Holden 31)
St.Davids 135 (M.Briginshaw 4/49, C.Perkins 4/36)

I lost the toss and was sent in to bat with  overcast conditions and the possibility of rain. I opened the batting with Raj and Brooke, they struggled early with the ball swinging in the air and cutting off the seam. We were soon 4/16 from 14 overs and in real trouble. Our batting didn't get much better as the ball kept moving around and the outfield was very slow. We slumped to 8/78 before there was a good partnership of 62 between myself and Dean "Disco" Holden. Disco ended up making 31 in an excellent innings and I managed 47 not out. We ended up making 144 with only 5 boundaries hit which indicates how hard it was for the batsmen.

144 was always going to be hard to defend especially when the following week the outfield was short and fast with little rain during the week. Our bowlers were up to the task and with Matty B taking the first 3 wickets cheaply we were right in this game. Chris Perkins got the next couple and all of a sudden we had St. Davids 5/73 with their best batsman (Newman)  back in the pavilion. The St. David's captain had to retire hurt after going for a quick run and injurying his achilies whilst almost being run out. This left the game wide open as they had little batting left. We took regular wickets and at 7/82 we had St. Davids where we wanted them. Their captain come back in with a runner and started hitting boundaries. They had a good partnership and at 8/129 with their captain still playing well we needed some magic. We got that in the order of a fantastic run out. Lizard threw down the stumps at the non-strikers end but the batsman was safe. The ball was then picked up by Matty B who fired it over the bails to Chris George and the St. Davids Captain was run out when his runner was short of the crease. We needed just one more wicket and St. Davids needed 16 runs for victory. Chris Perkins had several close LBW shouts denied until he got one plum in front and we won by 10 runs in a very close finish. Great bowling performances by Matty B and Chris Perkins - they are still the best bowling combination in Wilson Shield (A1).

We need to bat a lot better in the coming games and give our bowlers decent scores to defend. To improve our batting we need to concentrate on every ball that is bowled, watch the ball closely and react accordingly with good decision making and shot selection.

Round 3 VS Syndal

We were up against Syndal who last year played off in the Grand Final. They won the toss and decided to have bat with Dave Johnson and Shane Vanin taking the new ball. Dave managed to get an early wicket and Shane was very unlucky in the first 10 overs with balls going between bat pad, french cuts and sky balls just landing over the top.

They were patient batsmen and their number 3 took his time and made 151 with a partnership of 150 with another batsmen. We came out after tea really looking to fight back after a luckless start and to try and restrict them to below 320. It took a while to get the break through but there was some really good bowling from Michael Armstrong and after that Dave Johnson and Chris Ragkeb came back on and went through the last 5 wickets for less than 30 runs.

BOWLING:

David "The Mayor of Syndal" Johnson 22 overs 5 for 83
Shane "The Pest" Vanin 22 overs 1 for 90
Michael " Lil Bit" Armstrong 21 overs 1 for 95
Chris "Rags" Ragkeb 8 overs 2 for 51

After Syndal put 362 to chase on the board it was important for us to get off to a great start. Brendan Coull and Sarve Senior were opening back up in the 2nds and it was a good chance for them to impress. They started out pretty solid but and edge and a run out would see us at 2 for 12 not long into the innings and then a wicket the very next ball at 3 for 12.

Adrain Grylls really performed well hitting a very nice 59 which was well deserved and should set up the rest of the season for him. Monkey and Snail tried hard to hang in there with Adrian before they were both dismissed before tea. Tea 5 for 100.

After tea we really wanted the boys to crunch through the next 40 overs and try and get some runs and confidence for the matches to come. Enter Turtle who after the first over had gone to around 14 runs and hitting them pretty sweet. Turtle kept hitting some big balls while Chris tried to hang around with him. Turtle finished with a well hit 40. Dave Johnson came and managed to settle himself and then decided to hit some nice shots which were really solid and ended up making a pretty quick 25. We were all out for 193 off 60 overs.

BATTING:

Adrian "Bear" Grylls 59
Chris "Turtle" Briginshaw 40
Dave "Mayor of Syndal" 25

If we can bat the 80 overs and have a few more partnerships we have the batting line up to make 250 + which would really make it tough for other sides to chase.

3rd XI

Playing Burwood Districts I won the toss and chose to field. We bowled ok but our fielding was pretty poor, we did manage to take a couple of good catches  though and restrict them to 199 of their 40 overs. Ivan and Pralabh the best of the bowlers with 2 wickets each.

In reply we smashed them all over the joint being led by first gamers Glen Mahoney and Aditya Ganesh. We managed to reach the target in 30 overs only losing 3 wickets along the way. Best Batsmen were Glen Mahoney with a faultless 102 and a great innings considering he hasn’t picked up a bat since last season, and Aditya Ganesh playing his first game scored a very polished 53 not out.We are now 2 and 1 and back on track for the season with 8 sides now on 2 and 1.

Cheers powelly

One Day Side - Round 3

Playing Heatherdale away, we won the toss and elected to bowl first. Some solid bowling and catching which improved as the innings went on, saw us dismiss Heatherdale for 213 in the 40th over.

Mick Stevenson 2/33 off 8, Rama Digumarti 4/40 off 8, Anch Papa 2/31 off 8, and Chris Hoare 2/24 off 4 were the wicket takers.

Greg McCormick snagged four catches and a badly bruised chest!

In reply we were always on the pace but did not have anyone go on and get a fifty, which led to an exciting finish. Big Rama went 6, 6 at the start of the 36th over to get us home, 9 wickets down.

Dunge Newman 29, Stu Brady 32, Greg McCormick 32, Anch Papa 37 and Rama 20 were the leading scorers.

A solid victory!

Thanks and regards, Slugger
