1st. X1 Match Report

Round 4

Glen Waverley Hawks 3/164 (B.Coster 70*)
Mulgrave Country Club 162 (M.Briginshaw 3/50, L.Galle 3/28, C.Perkins 2/27)

I lost the toss and was asked to bowl so opened the bowling with Matty B and Luke Galle. Luke Galle took our first 2 wickets and at 2/23 we were applying some good pressure. Chris Perkins came on first change and also grabbed 2 important wickets. Matty B didn't get a wicket in his first spell of 10 overs but in his second spell took 3/30 from 9 overs to finish with 3/50 from his 19 overs. We were always on top and Mulgrave C.C best partnership was only 26 so we were consistently getting wickets. All the bowlers did the job and lizard also picked up a wicket and so did myself. We ended up having them all out for 162 in the 62nd. over. That left us with 14 overs to bat to complete the first days play. I opened the batting with Raj and Brad Coster. They did a great job of playing straight, keeping out the good ball and scoring off the loose ball. Really good effort by both openers to leave us in a commanding position at 0/43 at stumps. The next week we lost Raj early and at 1/53 Cookie and Brad put on a 50 run partnership before Cookie was out for 26. Scotty Zach came in and played some nice shots before he miss-timed a pull shot and was caught at mid-on. I came in at 3/126 needing just 37 for victory. Brad kept batting well with the feature of his batting being a nice straight bat and elegant drives. He batted brilliantly without giving a chance to be 70 not out. His knock was certainly the best innings of the season so far. We were able to pass their score just before tea on the second day losing just 3 wickets. It was a very satisfying victory with both bowlers and batsmen doing equally well. That puts us in a good position and after 4 rounds we have 3 wins and 1 loss.

Scott Perkins
2nd XI ROUND 4 VS Mulgrave CC

We were playing at Mackie road vs Mulgrave both teams 1 win 2 losses. As some of you know the ground is probably the biggest ground that we will ever play on and when we rocked up the first week the grass was very thick. After chatting to Snail if I won the toss I would bowl even though it was a glorious day for batting. And it is always hard the first game over 30 c which it was. I won the toss and bowled.

Their opening batsmen came out from ball one and played dead bat and at drinks they were 0/23 after 21 overs. We then got a breakthrough with Micky Armstrong taking 3 wickets leading up to tea. At tea they were 3 for 57 off 48 overs. With the combination of Adithya Ganesh who had come up from the 3rds and Micky Armstrong bowled in a partnership off 20 odd overs for not many runs.

After tea there seemed to be a few guys that wanted to try and hit a few runs but even a good cut or pull shot off the middle was only 1 run in the long grass compared to perhaps an easy boundary on our ground. Real tight bowling as you can see below from Johno, Badcock, Micky and Disco which had them swinging wildly to try and get runs on the board towards the end. They finished all out in the 77th over for 158.

BOWLERS

Micky "Pump Man" Armstrong 24 overs 7 for 49
Chris "Naughty Shaft" Badcock 12 overs 2 for 19
David "Viva La Glorious" Johnson 20 overs 1 for 42
Dean "Unlucky" Holden 12 overs 0 for 18

Returning to the ground on the weekend much to our delight was a freshly cut ground and the temperature over 30c again. Even though 158 is not a major score, on a big ground it can be hard to chase down. I wanted the boys to just take their time work it around and create partnerships with each other 50 runs +.

We lost an early wicket in the second over but Snail and Haysy put an a nice 43 run partnership. After Snail was dismissed Adithya Ganesh came in and really got him self settled and then continued to really play some nice strokes with Haysy at the other end looking well in also. They also put on 44 run partnership which was really good to see. Cam Hocart also provided great support with Adithya putting on a 66 run partnership.

Batting was really encouraging with some great partnerships and plenty of batting still come as we passed them 5/161 after 50 overs.

BATTING

Adithya "SuperKing" Ganesh      64
Grant "Dumbass" Haye            53
Cam " Shimmer" Hocart           23 not out

Brilliant effort by the guys with both the bat and the ball. Congrats again to Micky Armstrong for picking up 7 wickets.

Koonung Heights  10/201 of 69.4 overs

Shane Vanin 24 overs 5/61

Playng at trinity grammar I lost the toss and their captain decided to field on a fairly hot day. He had a player from the firsts available on the second week. We batted very well and nearly managed to face our 80 overs at our first attempt this year. Sunny was the pick of the batsmen and looked certain to make a ton but got a bit slack and went out 20 odd short. Adithya was very comfortable at the crease and looked in total control until he got to 30 again and went out. Shane Vanin got stuck into their bowlers with the skipper late on and we managed to rack up 223 against a quality side.

In the field they were 0/1 overnight. We got of to a flyer the second week with Shane getting 2 wickets in his first over then Timmy chipped in and we had them 3/3. They stopped the rot until Adithya took a blinder to get their first x1 player for 7 and we had them 4/49. We bowled and fielded quite well and continued to be on top even though they had one bloke who got 50 ( Lee caught him on the boundary with a screamer) and another who got 80. Harsch came on after Timmy was cooked and got 2 wickets while Shane came back on to get the bloke on 80 and wrap up the game to win by 22 runs. Shane’s bowling was excellent and he surely was man of the match along with his 22 with the bat. We are now 3 and 1 and playing some good cricket.
