Round 5 v Nunawading Churches of Christ

Nunawading C.C.C   153 (P.Edridge 3/25, Matty B 2/40, L.Galle 2/27, C.Perkins 2/28)
Glen Waverley Hawks 130 (L.Galle 70, C.George 23)

I lost the toss and was asked to field on quite a hot and humid day. I opened the bowling with Matty B and Luke Galle and they managed to get a wicket each having the two openers back in the pavilion with the score at 28. They lost their next two wickets at 45 with Chris Perkins taking his first wicket and Matty B taking his second for the day. They then had a partnership of 37 before Chris Perkins had his second wicket being that of Ashley Keys (Capt.) caught on the fine leg boundary by Matty B.  At 5/82 we needed another wicket before tea to end a very good session in the field. Johno obliged with his first wicket and we went in for a sandwich having them 6/82. After tea the bastmen started to wear us down a bit and we didn't take regular wickets.  We ended up having them all out for 153 with Lizard taking 3 of the last 4 wickets to end with figures of 3/25. All the bowlers did a good job and the fielding was also of a very good standard. Chris Perkins took 3 good catches - two at short cover and one high ball on the square leg boundary. Chris George kept wickets really well, as usual. We needed to face 18 overs to complete the days play.

The batting didn't start well and a couple of bad shots saw us at 4/20 overnight. The following week we had a couple of ordinary decisions go against us and we slumped to 6/53. Luke and Chris George came together and built a much needed partnership. Luke and Chris both played themselves in and then started to get on top of the bowling attack. Luke hit some fantastic shots, amongst them 9 fours and 3 sixes in a great knock of 70. When Luke was out at 7/126 we needed just 28 runs with 3 wickets remaining. Unfortunately the tail didn't wag and we were bowled out for 130. Chris George made a very good 23 but the rest offered little resistance. In the end we lost of our last 4 wickets for just 4 runs which isn't good enough. Also to be 4/20 overnight we didn't have enough partnerships to beat their score of 153. We really need a number of batsmen making more runs if we are serious about making an impact this season.

2XI Round 5 Vs Yarraleen

Playing at home against the 3rd side on the ladder Yarraleen was always going to be a tough game after they came down from A1 a few seasons ago.

We were playing at home and on a hot day Yarraleen won the toss and decided to bat. The first wicket fell at 1 for 48 followed by a couple of quick ones after that and we had them 3 for 76 after a great opening spell from Disco and Vanin. Their number 3 and number 4 stuck in though and both made a pretty well hit 58 and 47. There was an edge off Badcock's first over that went through 1st and 2nd slip and could of saved 40 runs if taken but not to be.

Also there was a run out by Sonny which was out by a good 30 cm's after Gryllsy whipped off the bails but was not given by their square leg umpire. This would have had their number 6 out for less than 10 runs but he went on to make 42. The ground was very quick and anything past the infield was 4. But we were really bowling and fielding well taking all our chances and putting them in the right spots.

At tea we had them 4 for 160 which was probably a few more than what we wanted. After tea Shane and Disco started up again and really bowled well taking wickets constantly and not letting any partnerships through. At 5 for 182 we managed to take the next 6 wickets for only 57 runs with some great bowling by Shane and Badone to close out the day all out for 239 and Shane taking his 250th wicket. CONGRATS !

Bowling:

Shane "250" Vanin                       5 for 68 off 19.2 overs
Chris "Quick Singles" Badcock           3 for 63 off 13 overs
Dean "Sticks" Holden                    2 for 53 off 17 overs
Micky "Lil Bit" Armstrong               0 for  off 11 overs

After we managed to get them all out in the 57th over we were faced with 17 tough overs to see out the day. Sonny and Snail were the men to get us through to the close of play but a sharp catch at bat pad after Sonny middled the first ball saw him walking back to the pavilion. Gryllsy was the next to go out and try and finish of play and was batting as normal with snail putting on 48 run partnership and making a nice 27 before he got wrapped on the pads in the last over of the day.

In went Disco as our night watchmen to see out the last 4 balls which he did and we were 2 for 48 over night. Coming back on Saturday we required another 191 runs for the win with only 8 wickets in hand. Snail and Disco went out and looked to be batting pretty solid until Disco went for 8. After Disco took the overnight spot the hope was on Cammo to really dig in and make his normal stance and get a few runs but wasn't to be with another LBW shout going the way of the bowler. At this stage we were 4 for 76 and a big partnership was needed to fight back.

With Snail still out there and hitting them really well know Monkey came in and got him self in working hard with Snail to fight back a little and try to get back on top. After digging in and putting on a 49 run partnership Monkey went making 27 taking the score to 5 for 125 and with the inform Turtle coming into bat all hope was he could slay a big score but wasn't to be with another ball hitting the pads and another LBW.

After that we kept tumbling and from 5 for 125 we were all out for 158 in the 58th over which was a tad disappointing but there was some real good bowling from their opener who took 7 for 41 and just bowled left arm on the spot swinging  back in which most of the boys wouldn't of faced for a while.

But there was some real good positives in the field and with the ball and a few guys making some runs and getting a few starts which they can build on in the next few games. CONGRATS to Shane for his 250th wicket and lets hope we can really fight back this week so we can keep  our season alive and go 3 and 3 against Koonung who haven't one a game.

Batting:

Dean "Snail" Perkins            62
Adrian "Bear" Grylls            27
Mick "Monkey" Brennan           27

Round 5 v’s East Buwood Bennettswood

Adithya Bala 32

Harsch Kothari 32 no

Pralabh Gupta 30

Arun Sarve 27

Shanti Joglekar 23

Brendan Coull 21

East Burwood Bennettswood  10/182 of 57.3 overs

Harsch Kothari 14 overs 5/35

Ivan Greaves 20 overs 2/46

Pralabh Gupta 6 overs 2/37

Adithya Bala 0.3 overs 1/0

Glenn Powell 6 catches 1 stumping

We won the toss and decided to bat on a good batting day. Every one got starts with only 2 players not reaching double figures. We ended up with a very good score against a quality opposition. The only down side was the highest score was 32 and some of us should have gone on with it from there. In our side there is a lot of competition for batting spots so the boys have to take their opportunities when they come. 238 was always going to be tough to get on the second week.

We opened with Jamie and Ivan after losing a few bowlers from the last game. They had a bloke getting into us until Ash caught him on the fence with a ripper. We tightened the screws from there and got a steady flow of wickets. Ivan bowled his first 18 overs straight and they couldn’t get him away at all. Mean while Harsch was cleaning house at the other end with some sharp seam bowling. We got through them to be 9/132 at tea. After tea we were a little sloppy letting their  last 2 put on 50 until the skipper got a stumping for his 7th dismissal of the innings. We won by 56 runs with Harsch and Ivan the pick of the bowlers. We are now 4 and 1 and have just beaten 2 of the better sides in a row. Good cricket boys keep it going.

Cheers powelly

One Day Side

Round 5 - playing Box Hill North at home we lost the toss and were sent into bat. A whirlwind start by Rama, supported by Bockers, saw us able to build a big score to finish at 7/330 after our 40 overs.

Rama 61 not out, Bockers 33, Cuddles 43, Sheak Wynd 62 retired, and Turtle 58 retired all batted very well.

In reply Box Hill North finished at 8/254 after their 40 overs. We were a little fatigued and dropped way too many catches. Cuddles 2/18 off 3 and Anch 2/32 off 4 overs were the leading wicket takers.

A good win resulting in us moving to second on the ladder.

Round 6 - unfortunately we had too many players unavailable and had to forfeit against Waverley.

Thanks and regards, Greg
