1st. X1 Match Report

Koonung Heights all out 201 (C.Perkins 7/55)
Glen Waverley Hawks all out 157 (T.Bockman 60, S.Perkins 35, A.Ganesh 23)

I lost the toss and was asked to field by the Koonung Heights captain. I opened the bowling with Luke Galle and David Johnson was asked to push into a strong breeze. Johnno picked up our first wicket and at 1/16 we were off to a good start. Luke Galle bowled 9 very good overs in his first spell making use of bowling with the strong wind. He didn't take a wicket but only conceded 10 runs in a tight spell of bowling. Johnno also bowled 9 good overs in his first spell with figures of 1/19. Chris Perkins replaced Luke and with some excellent line and length took a couple of wickets whilst Lizard replaced Johnno bowling into the wind. They bowled well to tea where we had Koonung 3/81. After tea I went back to the opening combination of Luke and Johnno, they both bowled tight but without luck. I needed some wickets so  Lizard came on to bowl and in typical fashion took a wicket straight away, at 4/123 the game was in the balance. Chris came back with the wind and took 5 of the last 6 wickets in a terrific second spell. He was patient and bowled in the right areas, attacking the batsman at all times. Chris ended with 7/55 from 20.2 and bowled superbly. Nathan Bungey took a late wicket and bowled well. It was a good all round bowling performance considering the old Koonung pitch didn't have much life in it and the ball deteriorated very quickly. If it wasn't for some good batting by the Koonung captain having amassed 113 they would have been in a lot of trouble.

After bowling them out for 201 we had 6 overs to survive at the end of the first week. I opened the batting with Raj and Bockers. Unfortunately Raj was out LBW after hitting the ball and the ball pitching outside leg stump. Cookie came and went in the same fashion and with two bad decisions we were 2/17 overnight. We resumed the following week with Bockers and Aditya at the crease, they batted well together and Aditya played some lovely drives until he picked up a full toss and put it down fine legs throat. Bockers and myself came together and we managed to put on 81 for the fourth wicket. Bockers concentration was excellent and his shot selection could not be faulted. He hit the bad ball for four and worked other good balls for one's and two's. I was out just after Bockers made his fifty but at 4/133 we were still controlling the game. Unfortunately we weren't able to put any more significant partnerships together and lost our last 7 wickets for 24 runs. Bockers made a very solid 60 and never looked liked going out, he batted for a long time and played some excellent shots. There were 5 doubtful umpiring decisions, however, the real reason we lost the game was due to a lack of application and concentration whilst batting. We keep getting ourselves into winning positions without closing out the game. We need to apply ourselves more with the bat, if we lose a wicket we should be able to consolidate and build the next partnership. Too many times we have been out due to poor shot selection and bad execution.

2nds Round 6 Vs Koonung Heights

We were playing a bottom 4 side this round with only 1 win to their name so it was a good chance to really keep our season going and go 3 and 3 leading up to the christmas break.

We lost the toss and were sent into to have a bowl first. We started off well with Dean Holden and Chris Badcock taking the new ball and a nice early wicket a few overs in really got us going early and taking constant wickets up until tea. At tea we had them at around 4 for 80 or 100 with wickets to Badone, Disco and Jaime.

Those first 4 wickets were really important as they had a couple of blokes make some big runs last week with a 60 and a 100 but they were in the pavilion. Second over after tea saw bad cock find the edge twice in the over and Gryllsy taking a couple of nice catches. Their captain came out and ended up making a 58 which could have been less if we held an edge when he was 10 or so. Once he went Badone decided to turn it on and take wicket after wicket and Arun also bowled really well to dismiss the last batsmen and see them all out for 141.

Bowlers:

Chris "Naughty Shaft" Badcock 18 overs 9 maidens 6 for 36
Jaime "Adonis" Agaliotis 10 over 2 for 20
Dean "Greyhound" Holden 17 overs 1 for 42
Arun "Darkness" Chelvan 13 overs 1 for 27

Dismissing them for only 151 in the 60th over we had a nervous 17 overs to complete the day with Haysy and Snail opening it was a good chance to knock of some runs to comeback the week after and finish it off. An early edge from Haysy had us at 1 for 4 then followed by Gryllsy who got rapped on the pads and we were 2 for 8 before we knew it.

Again I turned to Disco for the second week and a row and asked if he could do the nightwatchmen duties which he did very well until some late pressure by some up close field changing saw him tuck it away and find and edge. In went Scotty Zach to see out that day and after 17 overs we were 3 for 38 with 103runs to win the next week.

This Saturday we had the challenge of getting back on top and an early partnership probably would of seen us get home pretty comfortably but Scotty Zach edged one second over and Snail was dismissed not long after along with Cammo. Chris Hoare came up from the oneday side and batted really well from ball one and hitting some very clean shots down the ground and slowly getting us back on top and the scoreboard ticking over. Monkey went to join him and to try and hang around with hoarey and build a partnership to  try and get us into a winning position which was looking promising till monkey edged one to gully and the 33 run partnership ended.

Arun came in with hoarey and again also got started and a few boundaries together and a nice partnership off 29 almost got us into a winning position until hoarey flicked one of his legs to mid wicket and the pressure was back on again at 7 for 121 and only 20 runs to win. Badcock went in and out and Jaime came into face a hatrick ball still needing 20 runs to get there and blocked out the over but no runs were added as Arun got a thick edge to point and we were all out for 121.

Batting:

Chris "The Big Show" Hoare 37
Arun  "Darkness" Chelvan 22

To lose by only 20 runs and having probably the strongest batting line up all year which is capable of making 250+ was very disappointing and we couldn't get over that we lost that game. All we needed was a nice partnership and a few guys to put their heads and really dig in but it wasn't to be this week. We will bounce back next week against Deakin and get that win back.

We will work on our batting through out the week and hopefully we can post a big total next week.

3rd X1 Day 2 defending 210 against heatherdale, we were always in trouble early as you could see it was going to be one of those days with blokes turning up late, balls landing just out of reach of fielders and a bloke making a ton with every shot in the air. That’s how it goes some times and to our credit we stuck at it, tried a few things and didn’t let the situation get ugly. Ivan, Shantanu, Ashkay and Chris all tried hard but we only managed to get 5 wickets for the day and 4 of them to part timers. All is not lost as we are now 4 and 2 and only just out of the 4. we will bounce back against Vermont next week and try and be 5/2 at xmas.cheers powelly

Heatherdale 5/236

G. Powell 3/47

A. Sarve 1/13

S. Joglekar 1/39

3rd XI Day 1 Round 6 v’s Heatherdale.

GWHCC 9 cc  210 of 80 overs

Shantanu Joglekar 81 no

Sunny Somaia 23

Glenn Powell 23

Chris Ragkeb 21

I won the toss and decided to bat first. We batted the whole day which was good but struggled a bit on a slow ground. I was happy that we got over 200 but we were not al that convincing apart from Shantanu who batted very well for 81 not out. Hopefully that will be enough for the win but we will have to bowl and field well to get the points. More to follow next week.

Cheers powelly

One Day Team

Playing Vermont at home we won the toss and bowled first. With only 10 players in the field we performed very well to contain Vermont to 5/207 after their 40 overs. Tushar Pai in his first game for the season was the pick of the bowlers taking 3/24 off 8 overs.

In reply we started in a solid fashion but then we lost several wickets quickly to be at 5/68 before some good middle order partnerships allowed us to finish all out for 172 in the 39th over. Anthony Papa top scored with 43, Alex Perry showed good form again to make 17, whilst Graham Cuddon finished 20 not out.

After this loss we are now third on percentage, one game behind top. Two games separate first through sixth. After eight rounds we are the only team yet to have a bye. We have a bye next Saturday 5/12/09 which will give us another win whilst being able to relax away from the field!

Thanks and regards, Slugger
