Round 7

Glen Waverley Hawks all out 201 (L.Galle 45, B.Calder 41, M.Briginshaw 40)
Templestowe 6/205 (M.Briginshaw 2/55)

I won the toss and elected to bat. We lost our openers very quickly and at 2/3 we needed a partnership. Cookie and Adithye came together and they put on 29 before Adithye was judged caught behind. I came to the wicket and with cookie started to build another partnership. Cookie was batting well and took 14 off one over to get himself back in form after a few low scores. When cookie was out for 41 we were 4/73 so Luke came in and batted well like he has all season. He was patient and hit some good cover drives and lofted on-drives. I only managed 24 and Bungey made a duck, at tea we were 6/98 and a long way from achieving our goal at the start of the day of making 250 runs. After Tea Luke kept batting well hitting the ball hard and straight.  When he was out for a well made 45 we were 8/153 and there was still a lot of work to do. Chris hung around for nearly an hour and showed what was possible if you occupied the crease. He only made 7 but held up an end and didn't give his wicket away. With one wicket remaining and the score at 169 we needed a last wicket stand of some magnitude. Matty B started hitting boundaries and with five 4's and two 6's made a very quick and entertaining 40. Although lizard didn't score in the partnership and was unbeaten on zero he batted really well and kept out the good balls at the end of each over. We were all out for 201 in the 67th. over so we had 10 overs to bowl to complete the days play. I opened the bowling with Matty B and Luke Galle, they both bowled well but without luck. I replaced Luke for the last 2 overs at his end and on the second last ball of the day had their opening bat caught very sharply by Adithye at Bat-pad. Templestowe were 1/15 after their 10 overs in what was a pretty even days play.

With Templestowe resuming on 1/15 Matty B took an early wicket when Adithye took another catch at bat-pad. Chris was keeping it tight at the other end and with the batsmen playing across the line of the ball we were well on top. Chris bowled a great spell of 17 overs 1/30  and with Lizard also bowling well and taking a wicket we went into tea having them 4/88 from 51 overs. We took a quick wicket after tea and with Templestowe 5/94 they were looking vulnerable. Unfortunately we dropped a couple of catches and they started to get on top of the bowling. We only took one more wicket for the day in a disappointing finish. We have a lot of work to do with the bat if we are to make some big scores after Christmas. We also need to field a little better, commit to the game of cricket and apply ourselves more at training.

2nds XI VS DEAKIN

Before the xmas break we came up against Deakin who are sitting top 5 on the ladder. Playing at their home ground at Deakin Uni I lost the toss and we were sent into bat.

There has been a good rivalry over the last couple of seasons and the Hawks managed to scrape home at the end of the 08 season around the same time by just 3 runs or so. We went out to bat on what is a fairly large ground and reasonably slow with a dodgy wicket that will often pop, cut, stay low or take your head off which one of their bowlers loves considering he has 26 wickets.

We did struggle from the word go and a lot of guys struggled to bat on the inconsistent wicket and lost wickets as follows 6(S Somaia) 6(C Hocart) 22(A Grylls) 40(S Zachariassen) 46(C Hoare) 49(M Brennan) 61(C Briginshaw) 67(A Chelvan) 67(D Holden) 71(D Johnson). All out for 71 in the 24th over which was disappointing.
We went out to bowl 52 overs to finish off the days play and struggled to get an early wicket with their opening partnership lasting 47 runs. After we managed to get rolling Johno warmed and we started to take wickets constantly a lot like our batting display. Two batsmen for Deakin made 38 and 34 and the next highest score was 10.
By the 52nd over we had them all out for 125 giving them 1st innings points and a 54 run lead going into next Saturday. Although they had lost to a reverse outright already that year and said that 100 - 120 runs is a good score on this pitch.
BATTING : N/A
BOWLING:
David "Beefcake" Johnson 15 overs 4 for 27
Michael "Skin Eater" Brennan 6 overs 3 for 19
Shane "Activity Coordinator" 13 overs 2 for 36
Arun " Darkness" Chelvan 7 overs 1 for 13

2nd Innings
With a 54 run lead to Deakin we were looking to just bat overs out and try and save the outright. With a mix of the openers I put Hoarey in to try and get us off to good start and leave Sunny coming in at 3. Hoarey battled well on the dodgy pitch and made a pretty well made 20 and was looking comfortable.
Sonny then came in a batted really well concentrating on every ball and just playing the pitch perfectly and batted for a well made 45 and went out for the 9th wicket. Those were the only two run scorers for the 2nd innings and we were all out for 94.
With only 40 runs to defend it was always going to be hard to defend but we thought if we could get on a roll we may get lucky. Only two wickets fell at the hands of Johno and they past us in their 17th over at 2 for 42 and we lost outright.
It was disappointing but an eye opener for the boys who are determined to bounce back in the new year and get a few more wins before the season is out. The game would be a lot more interesting if played at our home ground or on a decent pitch.
BATTING:
Chris "The Big Show" Hoare 25
Sunny "Sunz" Somaia 45
BOWLING
David "Beefcake" Johnson 9 overs 2 for 23

3rd XI playing Vermont.  I won the toss and bowled due to the conditions which I never do and never will again. They got 254 due to mediocre bowling and some sloppy fielding. One bloke slapped us around at the end for us to have a pretty ordinary day until the last 3 balls. They were 6 /254 and Ivan sent down a good ball which had a bloke spoon a nice and easy catch to Jamie to claim a wicket. Next ball Ivan Bowled got hit back over his head and looked like going for runs until Pralabh came flying around from mid on to take a great catch. That left Ivan on a hat trick with one ball to go. We decided not to change the field as the batsmen had crossed and put a bloke on strike who was 37 not out, we didn’t even put in a slip and left 3 out on the fence. Well you guessed it the bloke had a go and got an edge to first slip and I gladly took the catch for Ivan to grab a hat trick of the last 3 balls of the day. Congratulations Ivan it made up for all the luck you haven’t had in the last few weeks.

In reply we were bowled out for 156 to lose 2 in a row and come right back to the field. Senior was the only shining light with a very good 68 but didn’t have a lot of support. We have a few blokes back after xmas so selection should be very interesting. Be safe and see you all next year when we bounce back hard.  Cheers powelly

One Day Side Round 10 - 12/12/09

Playing Box Hill North away in the last game before the break, we lost the toss and were sent into the field.

This game marked a significant milestone; Graham Cuddon playing his 200th club or two day side equivalent game. A tremendous achievement by a legend of our club!

We missed some chances which proved to be costly on a postage stamp size ground. You did not need to middle the ball to get to the boundary and they took their chances and finished at 8/279 after 40 overs.

Tushar 3/39 off 8, Rama 2/47 off 8 and Mark Scott an unlucky 0/32 off 8 were the best of the bowlers.

In reply we started solidly and then accelerated to be close to the required run rate. Unfortunately no one went on to get 50 and we ended up all out for 200.

Slugger 36, Tush 35, Basher Coull 33 and Browny 27 were the best of the batsmen.

At the break we are 4th one game off top and one game clear of 6th. So things are very tight. In our own hands after the break.

Thanks and regards, Greg
