Round 11 - 16/1/10
Playing second placed Waverley away in the first match back after the break we won the toss and bowled first. We were a bit 'rusty' and did not bowl and field very well and as a result Waverley finished at 3/291 after their 40 overs. Rama was the best of the bowlers with 0/32 off 8 overs.

In reply we started really well and were on top of the required run rate. Unfortunately we lost a few quick wickets and then were unable to consolidate being dismissed for 167 after 27 overs. Dunge 53, Rahul 30 and Rama 22 were the best of the batsmen.

Round 12 - 23/1/10
Playing third placed Heatherdale at home we won the toss and put them in. Whilst unable to penetrate taking wickets, the bowling was reasonably tight with Heatherdale finishing at 2/237 after their 40 overs. Stuey Wynd was the wicket taker with 2/50 off 8 overs.

In reply we started like a house on fire and did not let up to finish at 3/240 after 25 overs. Chris Hoare 35, Rama 41, Tushar 30, Stuey Wynd 50 retired and Greg McCormick 50 retired all got amongst the runs.

Round 8  1st. X1 Match Report

Wheelers Hill 176 all out (L.Galle 5/46, Matty B 2/50, S.Perkins 2/20
Glen Waverley Hawks 4/179 (B.Calder 47, G.Mahoney 39, S.Perkins 52*)

I lost the toss and we were asked to bowl on a hot 38 degree day. Matty B started off pushing into a slight breeze and Luke bowled with the wind. After 9 0vers with no wicket it was decided to try Chris P from Luke 's end. Luke would then be swung around to Matty's end so that Luke could bowl into the wind assisting his out-swing bowling. It paid off with instant results as Chris took a wicket in his first over and Luke followed up with a wicket in his over at the other end - thanks Mahns.  Unfortunately Chris went down with a calf injury in his second over and couldn't bowl for the rest of the day. Luke took the next 2 wickets bowling a great line and length, drawing the batsman forward and swinging the ball away from the right-handers. Chris George was having a day out behind the stumps taking 3 catches with only 4 wickets to fall. Chris George continued his good work getting a fantastic stumping off my bowling when I replaced Luke who bowled a great spell of bowling. At 5/87 from 37 overs we went into tea having done everything right so far. Myself and Matty B continued bowling after tea and when Mahns took a safe catch at slip off my bowling the Wheelers Hill captain was out and we were applying enormous bowling pressure. We continued to make inroads when Luke came back for his second spell picking up two quick wickets, he ended with 5/46 from 17 overs and the batsman had few answers to his length, swing, pace and bounce. Chris George ended with 5 dismissals with 4 catches and 1 stumping in a polished display behind the sticks. Matty B cleaned up the last two wickets to end with 2/50 and Bungey and Lizard bowled well doing a good job for the team. Wheelers Hill were bowled out for 176 in very hot and testing conditions, we certainly had the better of the days play so far. With 13 overs to face at the end of the first weeks play I opened the batting with Brad Coster and Trent Bockman. They both looked good early but Brad was stumped in the 11th. over for 9. Overnight at the end of 13 overs we were 1/34 with Bockers looking good on 17.

Resuming the next week Bockers was out early so I came to the crease and with Cookie put on 60 for the third wicket. Cookie played some good drives and when he is playing those convincing pull shots you know he is in form. He played some cracking pulls hitting 6 boundaries in his aggressive 47. Mahns joined myself in the middle and at 3/99 we still had some work to do. For a bloke who hasn't played a lot of cricket Mahns looked in excellent touch. He hit five 4's and two big 6's and also played the pull shot very well. Unfortunately with only 4 runs required for victory Mahns was bowled for an excellent 39. In that time he notched up 8,000 runs for the club and is a true champion player. That left myself to hit the winning runs in a memorable victory. I ended with 52 not out and we played some inspiring team cricket with everyone contributing to the win. We need to win the remaining three games to make the finals so lets replicate the way we played in this game for the rest of the season.

RND 8 VS Blackburn North

Round 8 would see us play the top side Blacky North who have only lost the 1 game. I finally won the toss for the second time this year and choose to bat as it was 39 degrees. We started off well with Snail batting comfortably and Hoarey coming in at 3 looking good also. The ground was extremely slow as it had thickened up over the break so some hard hitting strokes from Snail and Hoarey that were easily 4 were just 1's or 2's.

At tea we were feeling good sitting at 3 for 93 which is probably our best start for the season. Before and after the break Cammo and Monkey managed to put a little partnership on and batted for the first 30 or 40 minutes after tea which really got under the top sides skin. After a partnership of 30 Cammo was dismissed and monkey soon to follow and then a quick fire 20 from Turts but then only to see us loose 5 for 40 and we were all out for 181 in the 66th over a bit disappointing considering we were travelling very well early and set it up for a total of over 200 +.

That left us 11 overs to bowl and a couple of quick wickets would have been handy but an LBW appeal that got turned down and a gloved bouncers from Johno just eluding gryllsy would see Blacky North at 0 for 33 at the end of the day with only 148 to get the next week.

BATTING

Michael "Monkey" Brennan        48
Dean "Snail" Perkins            30
Chris "BigShow"                 25
Chrissy "Turtle" Briginshaw     20

2nd week and a little bit cooler but still muggy out in the middle with Johno and Badcock opening up it was important that we could tie them down early and snatch a couple of quick wickets to put us on top. Blacky North added another 20 odd runs before Johno managed to get an LBW and  a juggled catch at slip of Badcock had them 2 for 65. Their skipper came in at number 3 and struggled early against Johno who was swinging it in and cutting it a lot. About a dozen balls were left through out the day from outside off only to miss but millimetres and just go over the top.

Johno got on a bit of a roll and badcock snagged another one and we had them at 8 for 129 by tea and right on top but their skipper looking very comfortable by now and yet to give a chance. We came out after tea and their number 10 just plodded away trying to hang in and just turn the ones to give the strike to his captain.

Slowly they chipped away at the total and all bowlers trying everything just to get that wicket to get the last batsman in. A couple of LBW shouts again which the skipper said was close on his and out on the other guy were turned down and they managed to pass us 8 down still. Their skipper finished 79 not out and won the game for them and did not give us a chance throughout the day.

BOWLING

David "Miami" Johnson           29 overs 4 for 67
Chris "Off Schlong" Badock      15 overs 2 for 50
Dean "Sticksy" Holden           18 overs 1 for 54
Michael "Monkey" Brennan        4 overs 1 for 5

Even though we lost when we were sitting in such a good position it was really good to see the boys fight it out to the end and we probably played our best game this year with the bat and a great fielding and bowling display by everyone. Would have been great to knock off the top side and for the boys to have a really good win as they deserve it.

We have Nunawading next week then a couple of sides towards the bottom so lets see if we can finish with 3 wins on the trot.

Cheers
